Welcome to Weekly Whisper #151.

What's the mask you're wearing?

We all wear masks.

Sometimes we wear them just to get through the day.

Sometimes we wear them to navigate a tricky situation at work.

Sometimes we wear them to project confidence or hide anxiety.

Sometimes we wear them to help someone else to navigate a tricky situation.

Sometimes we’re aware of the mask, sometimes not.

Sometimes we have relationships where we are ready, willing and able to lay them down for a time and are loved for what’s behind the mask.

But, we all wear masks.

As Robert Kegan suggested “In an ordinary organization, most people are doing a second job no one is paying them for. In businesses large and small… most people are spending time and energy covering up their weaknesses, managing other people’s impressions of them, showing themselves to their best advantage, playing politics, hiding their inadequacies, hiding their uncertainties, hiding their limitations. Hiding.”

Consider this.

How do you like to be seen?

How do you think you’re actually seen?

Similarities and differences?

What would you prefer remain hidden?

Quote of the week:
Sometimes it's not the people who change, it's the mask that falls off - Haruki Murakami

In who’s company would you be willing to lay down the mask for a while?

What about your own company?

Find a safe space where you can give the mask a rest.

Freedom Fridays Episode 84 Featuring Dan Robins

In episode 84 of the Freedom Fridays podcast, Pete chats with Dan Robins, board member for gender pay gap advocacy group ‘Seat at the Table’.

Pete and Dan dive headfirst into some of the challenges of paid parental leave, particularly for Dads. In encouraging Dads to take parental leave the conversation explores some of the benefits for organisations, parents and the wider society.

Pete asks some challenging questions about fairness for those without kids and the potential impact on small business.

An authentic, practical, philosophical and real conversation for any working parents.
