Welcome to Weekly Whisper #158.

You can’t accelerate experience but you can accelerate learning - Steve Borthwick

Last weekend saw a plethora of sporting events come to a conclusion - Wimbledon, Euro’s, Rugby Internationals, COPA etc.

As we head into another Olympics where many victories and losses will occur and many tears and tantrums will be shed exposing the resultant stories and justifications.

It’s thought that we learn more from our losses than our victories so I was fascinated to read a comment made by Steve Borthwick (England Mens Rugby Union Coach) post the 2 test defeat by the All Blacks at Eden Park last Saturday.

You can’t accelerate experience but you can accelerate learning

Grateful for the experience his team gained in playing one of their toughest opponents in their own back yard. Disappointed not to come away with a better result. Encouraged by the level of performance shown under pressure.

And not just focused on learning but how to accelerate it.

Yes, our experience can compound to deliver higher levels of skill and achievement.

A bigger yes to optimising our learning and accelerating it by bringing some intentionality to it.

A simple Win Learn Change discipline for you to replicate:

1 - What were the highlights that were caused by something you did?

2 - What was hard and difficult but taught you something about yourself

3 - What can I replicate or tweak in similar circumstances next time?

4 - What am I willing to intentionally practise in preparation for next time?

If there’s some truth in the saying ‘we never meet a strong person with an easy past’? Then, some intentionality and deliberateness…and yes, daily…pondering and implementing some of your own reflections on the questions above, cannot NOT make you better.
