Welcome to Weekly Whisper #165.

It’s only a point

Roger Federer’s recent commencement speech to the graduating class of Dartmouth College is doing the rounds.

Explaining that of the 1,526 singles matches he played he won approx. 80% of the matches, however he only won about 54% of the individual points in those matches.

Roger is considered one of the best to play the game and yet he only won barely more than half the shots he played.

“When you lose every second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot… you teach yourself to think ‘it’s only a point’.

“You want to become a master of overcoming hard moments” and the sign of a champion are those who know they’ll “lose over and over again but have learnt how to deal with it”.

“You move on… relentlessly adapting and growing”.

The insight for me is that between the shots is where the opportunity to re-set is.

Between the shots is where the opportunity to remind yourself that ‘it’s only a point’.

Between the shots is the opportunity to focus your mind on the present not the past.

It’s one meeting that didn’t go so well… focus on the next one.

It’s one sale you didn’t get … focus on the next one.

It’s one opportunity that didn’t come your way… focus on the next one.

It’s one conversation that didn’t go as well as hoped… focus on the next one.

The insight is how are you focusing on the next one… with a historical mindset of ‘I lost the last point’ or ‘what can I learn, adapt or change so that I’ve got more chance of winning the next one’?

Roger provides many insights and it only takes 20 mins to watch the speech in full here.

Will you?

Or are you too busy?
