#171 You're still succeeding - it might just be slow and invisible
Oct 21, 2024Welcome to Weekly Whisper #171.
You're still succeeding - it might just be slow and invisible
Much of what we achieve is built on the compounding effect of small actions or behaviours that we often don’t see or recognise.
We might be aware of the action or behaviour, e.g. taking a 5 minute break between meetings, but not necessarily aware of the direction it’s taking us.
We tend to focus on the big signs of progress - closing a deal or landing a promotion. But what about the small, seemingly invisible steps that built the foundation for that win?
The aggregation of micro-wins e.g. having the courage to ask for help, allowing a task to be good enough for now, or simply taking five minutes to plan for tomorrow - often go unnoticed, even by ourselves.
Breakthroughs can happen in an instant but the foundations for those breakthroughs are often the result of steady, incremental micro-efforts over time.
Progress often feels invisible because it unfolds slowly and quietly, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
Without taking a moment to recognise these small steps, it’s easy to feel as though we’re not moving forward, even when meaningful progress is being made just beneath the surface.
When we focus only on the big wins, we overlook the critical growth moments along the way.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of “achievement chasing”, where satisfaction is tied to visible results. Leaving us constantly striving for the next big goal. But if we only measure success by those milestones, we miss out on valuable lessons embedded in the process. We also risk burnout if we only allow ourselves to feel fulfilled when we reach the end.
Invisible progress builds the muscle for growth. The daily actions we take, the micro-wins we collect, and the effort we invest - even when we don’t notice - create the foundations to sustain long-term success.
So, how often do you pause to notice the progress that isn’t obvious?
Are you tracking the small, invisible micro-wins that are quietly laying the foundation for something bigger?
Every step in the right direction, no matter how small, counts - even if no one, including yourself, sees it.
