#173 Do more of the verb to get more of the noun
Nov 04, 2024Welcome to Weekly Whisper #173.
Do more of the verb to get more of the noun
Years ago I came across the idea that ‘love is a verb’ (often attributed to Stephen Covey) and it changed how I viewed the idea of connection and love within my relationships.
I began doing things and saying things that demonstrated love rather than just leaving it as a concept in my head or a feeling to be felt.
Doing more things that demonstrated love created a greater feeling of love and connection.
More recently I watched a Simon Sinek short How to Build Trust: Ask for Help in which Sinek suggested that trust is built more from asking for help, than offering help – doing a different verb to get an adjacent noun.
A key trait we expect in leaders is integrity. Yet, if a leader's integrity isn’t visible or demonstrable, then it’s left to chance that they truly possess it.
Want to be a writer? Then write.
Want to be an entrepreneur? Do more entrepreneurial things.
Want to have more energy? Do things that energise you.
Want more peace of mind? Do more peaceful things.
Want to feel motivated? Take some action. The motivation ensues.
Want to develop a deeper relationship with a client but you don’t know much about them? Start sharing what they might not know about you.
Of course, more of the verb to get more of the noun isn’t necessarily grammatically correct but could be directionally helpful.
Do more of ‘the thing’ – maybe even in small doses – in order to ‘feel more of the thing’ or ‘be more of the thing’.
Doing ‘the thing’ is a vote for an upgraded version of ‘the thing’ rather than waiting for ‘the thing’ to happen.
So, what do you want?
Great, now do the smallest act repeatedly and watch the magic happen.
