Welcome to Weekly Whispers #2


What did you pick up and explore from Week #1? Did you embrace anything and find a place in your life to practice? What did you ignore or disagree with? What surprised you?

I'm going to try and provide as much variety as possible so here's a couple of things I've been struck by this week.


1. You become like to your surroundings - environment trumps mindset

As someone who has immersed himself in all things mindset for over 20 years, I've taken a while to reconcile this. An anecdote about my son got me across the line. His eating habits were probably typical of many young men in their 20's - late-night pizza, sugary cereal as a snack, and the odd burger. On the odd occasion just fine but not so healthy as a lifestyle. No amount of prompting, nudging, cajoling from his parents made any difference...until. He got a job at a local salad/poke bowl outlet. He loved the vibe, the colleagues and the opportunity. Of course, now surrounded by making healthy options for others he became like his surroundings. His late-night snack was a poke bowl. His lunch was salmon or vegetarian. His choices now are completely different. Despite knowing what to do and what not to do, it wasn't until he was surrounded/immersed in a different environment that his behaviour/choices changed. No amount of mindset training or awareness would have made much sustainable difference.

So, knowingly or not, what have you surrounded yourself with that is influencing your choices? What habits? What people? What choices? What outcomes? What mindset?

2. Growth and comfort can't co-exist

That's it. Simple. You're either expanding or contracting. Apparently, Ray Kroc once said, "As long as you're green, you're growing. As soon as you're ripe, you start to rot". Our lives might not be as binary as that but I'm curious to know if you feel you have the right balance between growth and comfort given your current circumstances? Depending on what you are going through it could be wise to lean into comfort for a while. The choice becomes an issue if you find yourself living there. Maybe it comes down to who & what you've become surrounded with?


3. Question of the week - Where do you get your certainty from?

When you are going through some form of transition or transformation and it's a bit messy, where do you go/what do you do to feel certain? Do you do something physical? Do you have a place - outside? Inside your head? Do you seek a certain person out? A certain memory?
