#44
Nov 29, 2021Welcome to Week #44
What whispers did you hear from #43?
What do you say about yourself when asked? Did you play with changing it?
How did it feel to express gratitude?
What’s the future you whispering to you?
Are you choosing to be stuck or choosing to remain?
1. Boys do cry
Yes we do and the sooner we acknowledge, normalise and share the opportunities to do so then the sooner we can encourage everyone to share any hurt inside.
Movember happens during this month and this campaign video from a partner organisation really touched me.
There are many great forums for men and boys to share what’s going on inside before it’s too late. Check the video and website.
2. Never underestimate the significance of your influence as teacher
Beautiful moment at the Audience with Adele recording in London. You’ll need to watch as I won’t spoil the surprise.
Whether you’re an actual teacher or not we provide moments for others to learn from our example. We can either be a good, a bad, a neutral or some other type of example. Thankfully, we’ll never know as I’m sure the pressure might be too much for some! Despite not knowing we can still have a significant impact on those around us as they are touched by our actions and deeds…many, many years later. You will never know when someone else needs you to be the best version of yourself so show up as the best you as often as you can. A single conversation or interaction can save or change a life.
3. Question of the week – What are you putting up with that in putting it down you’d be able to move on?
Maybe it’s something physical – lack of mobility, extra lockdown weight.
Maybe it’s something emotional – a comment someone made, a lack of something.
Maybe it’s mental – a pervasive thought you have about yourself, a constant worry about something.
Maybe it’s something else that you can’t quite put a finger on or articulate well.
Have you ever forgotten to put up with it? Has there been a time when inadvertently you’ve been distracted and you forgot you were carrying it? What if you could continue to forget? What if you forgot for long enough that it would take too much effort to go back and get it?
When you wake up tomorrow see if you can forget to pick it back up.
4. Quote of the week - "To dare is to risk one’s footing momentarily. To not dare is to risk losing oneself" Søren Kierkegaard
Note the ‘momentarily’. Maybe even that is too scary for some. Maybe oneself is good enough for the current moment. And if it’s not? What if there’s an acorn seed within that would welcome some space and attention. Would you be willing to consider taking a small risk in safe enough conditions to see if you’ll allow yourself to be found?
5. Freedom Fridays Podcast
My weekly conversation with ordinary people doing extraordinary things. We explore some of the big changes people have gone through and what’s helped the journey. The intention is to share as openly as possible some of the ingredients – the good, the bad, the ugly – that shape our shift from ‘I have to’ into ‘I choose to’. The lessons are hiding in open sight within the conversation – it’s up to you how you apply them.
This week I chat with a couple of guests - one of whom is my youngest daughter! Both Sammy & Evie have just finished their HSC (Higher School Certificate) and have finished their 12 years of institutionalisation. Neither of them have been guests on a podcast and have the rest of their lives ahead of them. I was really interested to understand what that change was like. What’s it like embarking on the rest of your life? What are they looking forward to? What have they left behind? They might be first-time podcast guests but they share some raw and genuine thoughts and feelings about the change ahead of them.
