Winners Trophy. The event is won long before you dance under the lights

Welcome to Weekly Whispers #5

Which whisper did you hear from Week #4?

Did you have a go at any If-Then statements?

Did you peek into any uncomfortable truths?

Have you done ‘the work’?

Did you notice how much you judge yourself – harshly or compassionately?

Here's what's struck me this week.

1. The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights  - Mohammed Ali.

In Australia, “doing a Bradbury’ has become vernacular for winning something because you are the last person standing. It comes from Steven Bradbury who won Australia’s first ever Winter Olympics Gold medal – watch the race here:

I’ve heard him speak a couple of times. He talks about whether he felt he could accept the medal given the circumstances. What struck me most was he then said “I did accept the medal. Not for what just happened but for the 10 years of hard work it took me to get here”.

So whether your success comes down to chance or design the odds are higher in your favour if you’ve done the work to get there.

Fascinating podcast and some great nuggets of insight from 43.00 onwards.

2. Affirmations and diluting the doubt

As I’ve continued my basic podcasting, lots of ‘stuff’ has come up for me. Something that has helped me to dilute the negative thinking is listening to this Spotify playlist - Diluting Doubt.

It was recommended by a colleague in similar circumstances. When I’ve felt uncertain, overwhelmed, anxious about judgment, I’ve popped my headphones on and been silent for a few minutes. Thought you might like the resource too.

3. Question of the week: What do you value most?

Years ago, I attended the Stephen Covey program 7 Habits and one of the exercises was to consider your values. To this day I remember mine as 4 F’s – family, friends, fun and freedom. As I reflect on my life many years later it still feels relevant and congruent. Life is dynamic and we go through cycles depending on our circumstances – school or not, uni or not, job or not, partner or not, kids or not, career or not, legacy or not etc etc. It’s never too late and there’s never a bad time to reflect on what you value. Our values are like hidden rocks that we can cling to when we’re facing uncertainty.

4. Freedom Fridays - My weekly experiment with time and focus

My intention is to openly share a change I’m making within my life. I’m hoping you can take the lessons learnt and apply it to any change you want to make.

This week was predominantly all about ...

That's all for this week and I hope you enjoyed Weekly Whisper #5 - let me know if you did.
