Daily conflicting emotions

Welcome to Whisper #98.

You can’t selectively numb emotion Brene Brown

I’ve shared this, used this, pondered this, and ignored this ever since I came across it years ago.

My take on it. A fulsome human experience involves emotions, feelings, and moods and that those emotions, feelings and moods bring a unique colour combination to my life. They are an element in the unique lived experience I have during my time on this planet.

If you can’t selectively numb emotion – although I’m sure many of us think we can mask, hide and avoid it – then it presents 2 options.

Either we numb all our emotions or we feel all our emotions.

Numbing all our emotions might be necessary for certain emergency situations but living that way would make our lives different shades of vanilla.

Feeling all our emotions certainly contributes to the rollercoaster of life and brings with it all sorts of different shades across the colour spectrum.

If I reflect on my life to date I’ve been guilty of attempting to numb selective emotions with minimal success 😊

As I ponder my life to go, I’m voting for a full expression of the north, south, east, and west of the emotions I experience…unapologetically.

How about you? What emotions are you willing to release into the wilds of your life?

Question of the week:
Can you sit with your emotions without pushing them away?

And sitting with them usually means not finding distracting ways to push them down, ignore them, or mask them.

Sit with them long enough and they may have something to tell you.

As importantly, can you sit with the emotions of others?

Quote of the week:
To be human means to be constantly in the grip of opposing emotions, to daily reconcile apparently conflicting tensions. I want this, but I need that. I cherish this, but I adore its opposite, too - Stephen Fry

Have you ever felt opposing emotions at the same time? I know I have. It seems that our unique human experience allows us to. I can be happy about some things and sad about others. I can be excited about events in the future and apprehensive about others.

What are the opposing emotions you feel regularly?

Have you listened to Freedom Fridays Podcast Episode #70 Featuring Richard Oakes?

Catch up now, before next week's new release.

In episode #70, Pete chats with Richard Oakes. Richard is Group CEO for the Ohten Group, a serial disruptive thinker, and a world record-holding cyclist. The conversation touches on finding your why but looking inward not necessarily outward.

Pete & Richard discuss how choices can be inefficient and in taking the choice out, it speaks to who you are. Richard shares how his love of cycling gave him freedom and what it takes to be a world champion.
